The debates here can become very heated, sometimes people just want to bash the other side, or argue and refuse to concede any point that another person may make. I think that in an international forum, there is a great deal of hostility about the current US Administration. Because people that are discontent with the Administration can find similar voice here, it does seem left-leaning. Also, because this is international, people tend to get defensive when they feel that thier particular political culture is under attack. There are a few people here that I truely enjoy reading, even though they don't agree with me politically. I went through a very left-wing Criminology program where the professors were determined to turn me liberal - and came out of it with the ability to rationally evaluate, discuss and prove my right-wing points - to the extent that, even though they didn't agree with my position, my professors were sufficiently impressed with my abilities in these areas to put me on the dean's list and award me my degree 'with distinction'. So, you see, conservative opinions can be well thought-out, indeed. I've had some fascinating debates on these forums with people far to the left of me on the political spectrum without ever being treated as though I was unthinking, uneducated, incapable of analysis, or any of the other slurs that I've seen on this thread. I respect those people who have called me on my positions, made me think about them more, and in some cases made me re-evaluate and shift my positions in some things. Quite frankly, I don't know what's more dismaying - listening to people bash conservatives with their negative stereotypes, or listening to people who call themselves conservatives bash liberals with equally inane stereotypes and just feed the hostility towards the rest of us conservatives. The war of the parties has gone too far. These are the United States, last time I checked. I only wish that each side could have a shred of empathy for the other.
